Marquet R., 2006, The Neogene Bivalvia (Heterodonta and Anomalodesmata) and Scaphopoda from Kallo and Doel (Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium)

(142 textpages, 7 textfigures, 6 tables, 62 plates)

Summary: This work continues the study of the Pliocene molluscan fauna found during the dock construction works at Kallo and Doel, both municipality Beveren, province of Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Some new stratigraphic observations in the Deurganckdok works at Doel are presented and a nearby section at Melsele is described. All species of Bivalvia (Heterodonta and Anomalodesmata) and Scaphopoda discovered in these sections are described; their systematics, nomenclature, palaeo-ecology and occurrence are discussed. A number of species is recorded here for the first time in the Pliocene of Belgium: Semiericyna (S.) nitida (Turton, 1822), Laseina cf. farnesiniana (Cerulli-Irelli, 1908), Isocrassina bipartita (J. Sowerby, 1823), Goodallia parvula (Wood, 1853), Plagiocardium scabrum (Philippi, 1844), Sphenia binghami Turton, 1822), Xylophaga sp., Thracia (T.) convexa (W. Wood, 1815), Cuspidaria (C.) cuspidata (Olivi, 1792), Cuspidaria (C.) cf. obesa (Lovén, 1846), Cardiomya costellata (Deshayes, 1833) and Pseudantalis sp. Following new taxa are new to science: Isocrassina fusca ariejansseni subsp. nov., Nemocardium (Microcardium) doelense Marquet & Van Nieulande sp. nov., Spisula (S.) albertantonorum sp. nov., Venus (Ventricoloidea) multilamella ringelei subsp. nov. (Miocene), Lyonsia (L.) mermuysi sp. nov., Thracia (T.) inflata microgranosa subsp. nov. (Miocene). Other taxa got a new interpretation or status: Spisula (S.) obtruncata (Wood, 1857), Arcopagia (Arcopagiopsis) balaustina tenuilamellosa (Nyst & Westendorp, 1839), Panopea glycimeris (von Born, 1778), Turneria angulata (Wood, 1840), Cochlodesma (Bontaea) complanata Wood, 1857 and Thracia (T.) cf. villosiuscula (Macgillivray, 1827). A number of conclusions is drawn from this and the preceding publications on the fauna of the study area.
